Jay Hurst was admitted to law practice by the Maryland
Court of Appeals in January 2002; he has operated a solo practice devoted to
Federal criminal defendants since April 2003. He advises attorneys and criminal
defendants nationwide in matters of Federal criminal sentencing and Federal
Bureau of Prisons ("BOP") custody, helping clients in every stage of Federal
prosecution and punishment. Besides criminal law practice, Hurst also regularly
seeks open government records.
Hurst earned his Juris Doctor from the University of
Louisville's Brandeis School of Law in May 2000. During law school, Hurst served
as an IOLTA Fellow to the Legal Aid Society of Louisville, and clerked for two
years to the criminal and civil divisions of Louisville's Jefferson County
Attorney's Office. He also served as Notes Editor to the Brandeis Law Journal
and published regarding "One-Strike-and-You're-Out" evictions from Federal
public housing. Hurst cut his legislative teeth during this period, lobbying at
two Kentucky General Assembly sessions for Kentucky Fairness Alliance.
Hurst serves Of Counsel to FedCURE. As Chief of
Legislative Affairs, Hurst duties include examining and tracking Federal
legislation; evaluating the impact of legislation on the Federal criminal
justice system; preparing summaries, talking points, briefings, and FedCURE
position papers; and educating about Federal legislative processes.
